Coffee Of The Week

Guatemala Antigua Bella Carmona

I visited a fairly local spot this week that was entirely new to me. My daughter’s class went bouldering at Big Bald Rock, in the foothills above Lake Oroville. Not only was it a pretty drive, with fields of wildflowers greeting us through Browns Valley and Berry Creek, but the scenery there was spectacular. You’re in the foothills, surrounded by pine trees, and after a short hike you come out on an expanse of granite, with large boulders that look like they were sculpted by a giant artist.

The view was also amazing, and I have since read that on clear days you can see far over the valley. Unfortunately this all occurred on Tuesday, the day that it rained, so their trip was cut short, and the clouds/mist blocked much of the view. Now that we know about it, though, we’ll be sure to visit again. Another local gem. In completely unrelated news, Jack got a cast on Wednesday for a thumb he broke playing baseball. You never know what a week will bring.

This week we have a coffee for you for which we have received a number of requests. This is our Guatemala Antigua Bella Carmona, and it’s back in stock after a short hiatus. Antigua is a protected growing region in Guatemala, much like Champagne in France, and Hacienda Carmona, where this is grown, is part of the Antigua Coffee Producers Association, which is dedicated to the traceability of Antigua coffees. Hacienda Carmona is owned by Luis Pedro Zelaya Zamora, a fourth generation coffee farmer who has worked hard to produce the best quality coffee that he can, while honoring the coffee traditions of his family.

Each time we carry this bean, someone tells us about how it’s their favorite. In the cup it is sweet with vanilla and creamy milk chocolate tones. It’s a great example of a beautiful washed Antigua bean, and we’re glad to be able to offer it again.

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend (besides try this coffee!), may I recommend the Downtown Grass Valley Car Show? It’s always a fun family-friendly event, free of charge. All of downtown will be full of vintage cars, and you can stroll and view to your heart’s content. We’re even opening at 6 am tomorrow to accommodate all of those out early to setup. And if that’s not your style, the Growers Market at the Northstar House continues this week, and you can pick up your produce there. Whatever you do this weekend, drink good coffee. Cheers!

Coffee of The Week

Organic Rainforest Alliance Flores Wongawali Ngura Red Cherry

Last week, after a couple of false starts, we made it out of town for Spring Break. After viewing the wildflowers at Pinnacles National Park, we drove over to the coast and camped for a couple of nights at Sunset State Beach. The kids played in the ocean for hours (they’re crazy–it’s cold!), and Trace and I relaxed watching them. It truly was relaxing: the rhythmic sound of the waves, the fields of crops–fresh picked strawberries, mmm–, the California Trasher singing nonstop in a nearby tree: it was all soothing to my soul.

We had a little trouble heading home, with two blown tires (Les Schwab in Vallejo has my undying love), but we made it home late Saturday night. Sunday we threw together an Easter celebration. The highlight of the day was Archie and Lucy hunting for eggs. Archie was excited to find them, but Lucy thought they were a musical instrument, and danced around shaking them. Too cute!

On Wednesday of this week we got a green coffee order, so we’re excited to share a new coffee with you. This is our Organic Rainforest Alliance Flores Wongawali Ngura Red Cherry. How is that for a name? I can’t actually fit all of that on a label, so we settled on Organic RFA Flores. That’s a bit more manageable. Each word of the name is significant. You can read about the Rainforest Alliance here, and Wongawali is a cooperative of farmers. Ngura is the name of a unique Indonesian tradition of coffee processing, often called wet-hulled, and the Red Cherry Project coffees “provide dividends to farmers who deliver ripe coffee to collection centers” (see here).

All together this makes a unique coffee from a unique place. Flores is located to the east of Bali, and near the island of Komodo. It is the only place other than Komodo where you can find Komodo dragons, and it is part of the Indonesian archipelago. It’s an island of volcanoes, and this coffee is grown on the eastern slopes of Wolo Ngadha and Wolo Atagae. Coffee grows well in this soil, and you’ll taste the terroir in the cup: notes of chocolate and dried berries, and an earthy tang.

Keep reading for a snapshot of one of our newer employees, Glory. She is a sweetheart and a hard worker, and we love having her around. Tomorrow also kicks off the The Market at the Northstar House, and we’re excited to say that Family Friendly Farms will be selling our coffee this year. Then next week The Market continues, and downtown we will have our Car Show. Wherever your weekend plans take you, drink good coffee. Cheers!

Coffee Of The Week

Tanzania Peaberry Ngorongoro Highlands, Karatu Estate

There were two full days of sunshine this week! My spirits rose with the cloud dispersal, and I have a feeling that I’m not alone. When the weather is sunny, I want to get outside and work in the yard, or go for a run–or at least sit in the sunshine and listen to the birds. Really anything outside would do. Laughing at the antics of the chickens and geese is always good. It finally feels like baseball season should be here (it’s not actually that fun to sit and watch in the rain!).

This week had a number of highs and lows. The poor Skolaks all had the stomach flu, but at the store we got to meet sweet Nora (Liz and Ethan’s new baby girl), and Bailey is home from Scotland for a few weeks, and filling in. We have a tight knit crew around here, and it was a joy to reconnect with former employees.

From the Galapagos islands to the the mountains of Africa–coffee spans the globe. This week we’re headed to the Karatu Coffee Estate, in the Ngorongoro Highlands of Tanzania. Tanzania is a country in eastern Africa, south of Kenya, which boasts the highest point in the continent, with Mt. Kilimanjaro, and the lowest point, the floor of Lake Tanganyika. This coffee is grown in the Arusha region, at over 5000 feet elevation.

According to our broker, here, the Karatu Coffee Estate is located: “on the rim of the Ngorongoro crater, which is the largest unbroken caldera in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. More than 25,000 wild animals, including the largest population of lions, make their home within the crater walls.” Much care is taken with this coffee, and the peaberries are obtained with careful sorting. A peaberry occurs when only one bean grows in the coffee cherry, and they are generally higher in caffeine. These more rounded and smaller beans have to be hand sorted from the rest of the crop.

In the cup this Tanzania Peaberry Ngorongoro Highlands has distinct citrus tones. It’s snappy and sweet, with a light floral finish. Bright and delicious. You can try a cup on us this week with the code below. Keep reading for a snapshot of Teagan. Fun fact: her oldest sister worked here six years ago–you’d be amazed how many siblings we have hired over the years. Well, maybe not amazed, given that I share the office with my sister–and my brother and other sister also worked here years ago! Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts, and drink good coffee. Cheers!

Coffee Of The Week

Organic Galapagos San Cristobal

Despite the persistent rain, the days have been getting longer, and at our house more flowers are blooming each week. We now have daffodils, camellias, flowering quince, plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, and even the apple trees look like a day of sunshine might make blossoms appear. Last weekend was a tease, with beautiful sunshine. We played a baseball game, and drove to SF for a redo of our Hamilton experience. It’s amazing how much more cheery I feel with two days of blue sky.

Last week was also Lucy’s first birthday! They were in Indiana, visiting family, but we all enjoyed pictures of Miss Lucy celebrating. She’s walking around the store now–not quite keeping up with her brother, but I’m sure that she will be soon. It was great to get my Archie and Lucy hugs this week–the office was way too quiet while they were gone.

For the past week we featured our Costa Rica La Pastora Tarrazu, but I wasn’t able to find the time to write about it. So I’m leaving it on sale for another week, and you can choose if you want to try that, or our Organic Galapagos San Cristobal. We featured this Galapagos back before Christmas, but we’re excited to say that we got more in, so here it is.

Ever since I read about the Galapagos Islands as a child, I have wanted to visit. Ruth and I were talking earlier about how Master and Commander, the movie with Russell Crowe, showcased the beauty and unique nature of these islands. They must be something to see. This coffee comes from the island of San Cristobal, and you can read more about it at GalapagosCoffee.com. Their tagline is “From the Mountains of the Enchanted Islands.”

In the cup this Galapagos is sweet and nutty, with a smooth caramel taste. You can try a cup on us this week. Keep reading for a snapshot of Hannah. She’s always a cheery presence around here, and she works hard while doing college full time. I will be busy with ballet and baseball this weekend, depending on the rain. Here’s hoping for sun in the forecast soon! Cheers.

Coffee Of The Week

Organic Rainforest Alliance Java Kayumas Taman Dadar

Last weekend we continued the birthday festivities with a birthday present trip to Lake Tahoe. The snow is deep this year, and it makes the scenery even more magnificent. We had a fun ski day (me too this time), and the kids enjoyed the hotel pool after dinner. On Sunday we came home to a new trapeze hoop for Caroline, built by her grandfather while she was out of town. She’s been dancing on it ever since. Thanks Papa!

Although it’s raining now, we had a sunny weekend–making the snow almost blinding. Wednesday was Andrew’s birthday (happy birthday again Drew!), and some mean boss made him get up at 4 am and cook on his birthday (oops!). But it was nice to see the birthday boy on his special day. It happens to also be the first day of spring: yippee!

The daphne and crocus are blooming, and most of our daffodils are turning their cheerful faces to the sun. Today I noticed that the wild plum trees down by our creek are starting to blossom, and I hope the rain doesn’t knock them off. Blossoms in the wind are a delight to see, but not so good for summer fruit.

This week we have a beautiful Organic Rainforest Alliance Java Kayumas Taman Dadar for you. We’ve been able to carry this before, and it’s always a treat. This comes from small farms, which are an anomaly in a country with large government run estates. Taman Dadar means “flower garden,” and according to Royal Coffee, this is a perfect name:

“Taman Dadar, meaning flower garden, aptly describes the way smallholder coffee is cultivated, colorfully inter-cropped with parkia beans, avocados, erythrina, albizia, and leucaena trees, which produce food for local consumption and shade.”

Doesn’t that sound lovely? I’m certain that the scenery on these farms is breathtaking, despite the hard work. In the cup this is delicious, with a rich earthy taste typical of Indonesian beans. It’s full-bodied and chocolate-y. I’ll be drinking it this week, and I hope you each get a chance to try it. Keep reading for a snapshot of Scarlett, and whatever you do, drink good coffee. Cheers!

Coffee Of The Week

Brazilian Mogiana

We got in some fun new mugs in the last week or two, and I finally got them up online. The above set is my favorite (find them here and here). We had a poll going on Instagram between the grey and white options, and the grey won narrowly. Whichever you like, it will keep your coffee hot on a cold morning. I’m thinking that it will be my new backpacking mug this summer–it could hold soup, coffee, or even your favorite adult beverage.

Last weekend we had the fun of attending a Wings & Wine event at High Hand Nursery. The tickets were a gift from Chuck and Caroline, and all of us drove down to see some feathered friends. The final three birds were especially magnificent: a leucistic (all white) Red Tailed Hawk, a Eurasian Eagle Owl, and a Bald Eagle. All three had a wow factor, since they certainly aren’t something that you see up close everyday! Thanks Chuck and Caroline.

Yesterday I drove to Richmond to pick up Jack and classmates. They spent the week in San Francisco on an urban adventure, and it sounds like it was a nonstop trip. From California Academy of Sciences and Alcatraz to serving breakfast at Glide Memorial, they had a busy three days. What a great opportunity for learning and experiencing new things!

This is a sweet and nutty Brazilian, as I discovered as I drove yesterday. It was a delicious treat as the rain beat on my windshield and the rivers roared under every bridge I crossed. Today the sun peeked out, but this was a good week for coffee. And I hear that the rain hasn’t left the forecast yet, so we’ll keep making our magic brew to keep you going.

Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of coffee (granted, it’s a big country), and this Mogiana is one of the most renown growing regions. It is on the border of Minas Gervais and São Paulo in the south east of the country. This particular bean is a mix of Bourbon and Mondo Novo hybrid, two arabica varietals, and comes from small family farms organized around the Cooperativa Regional de Cafeicultores em Guaxupé. It is grade FC and SS, fine cup and strictly soft, which is the highest grade in the Brazilian coffee cupping.

I hope you get a chance to try this Brazilian this week. Keep reading for a snapshot of Josh, who both cooks and baristas for us. Enjoy your weekend. Cheers!

Coffee Of The Week

Kenya AA

Happy March! The big news in our family this week was that Andrew moved back to the area after five years in the Navy. He was stationed up in Washington, so not too far away, but we’re glad he’ll be closer to home now. It was great to have him at our weekly family dinner.

Nevada County greeted him with an atmospheric river, and the rain and gusty wind this week were something else. We lost a large pine tree on our property, and felt lucky that the only casualty was the kids’ zip line. The ducks and geese don’t seem to mind the weather at all–it’s just the people that get tired of being cooped up.

Speaking of coops, it amazes me that our chickens choose to leave their coop even in the sideways rain. To be clear, they do have food and water inside, but still they choose to go out. Although I did hear that they spent at least some of their day sheltered on the front porch!

This week we have a Kenya AA for you, from small family farms on the slopes of Mount Kenya. Often these farms are so small that they talk about the number of trees, instead of acres. You can imagine the care that you would take with your coffee plants if you only had a few–thus this is a beautiful coffee. It is fully washed and in the cup you’ll taste the signature Kenya sweet citrus flavors. Mmmm.

I need to go pick up my daughter from her middle school dance, so you’ll just have to come try this Kenya for yourself. If you’re looking for a reason to come downtown, tomorrow from 1 – 4 is the Foothills Celebration, a food and wine tasting in the local shops. It’s always a fun event, and it will be held rain or shine. Cheers!

Coffee Of The Week

Colombia Nariño San Antonio Natural

It is very rare in this area to have an unexpected snow day. It’s far more common to have a lot of hype about a coming storm, only to have it turn into nothing. So this Thursday was an unexpected treat (or not, if you’re not a snow lover). I had noticed in the night that we had received several inches of snow, and sure enough, the phone rang early to say that school was cancelled. Such fun! The kids slept late, and then played in the snow most of the rest of the day.

Up at the ski resorts they’re calling this “Februburied”–already smashing snowfall records for the month, with another week left. It’s great for our drought concerns: a larger snowpack stores more water. All the winter sports buffs are delighted, and I suspect that all the children are too–at least the ones like mine who LOVE snow, and days off of school. Friday, we did have school, and it was Crazy Hair Day, as evidenced by the picture of bird-nest hair!

This week we have a coffee grown at high elevation, but so near the equator that snow is extremely rare. This is a micro-lot Colombian, from a farm near Medina Espejo, in Buesaco, Nariño. Nilson Luis López Dias inherited his 24 acre Finca San Antonio from his parents, and he works with attention to care and detail to grow this Colombia Nariño San Antonio Natural.

Sr. Lopez works with Inconexus to improve his coffee, and their farm has won the Colombia Cup of Excellence in the past. This is also partly because of what the unique micro-climate where the finca is located. According to our broker, Royal Coffee: “Nariño’s proximity to the equator also means intense exposure to the sun (relatively constant and powerful year-round), which influences the cherry maturation rate. The municipality of Buesaco, which has an interesting micro-climate caused by warm air that rises from the canyons at night and acts like a protective blanket for the coffee plants. As a result of these combined attributes, coffee plants passively absorb the sun’s energy during the day and then come alive at night when the conditions are less harsh. This translates into concentrated flowering and long cherry maturation periods.”

The first thing you’ll notice about this coffee is that it is a dry-processed, or natural, coffee. This means that the coffee is dried with the fruit still intact, so that it goes from looking like a cherry to a raisin. When it reaches the desired moisture levels, it is hulled to reveal the green beans inside. You’ll know this because of the strong blueberry aroma when you open the bag. It’s an amazing and almost over-powering aroma, and in the cup you’ll taste similar fruity favors of creamy pear, caramel, and peach. Delicious.

I’m grateful for farmers who work hard to bring us exceptional coffees, with unique flavor profiles. This is completely unlike your typical Colombian coffee, and we’re excited for you to try it. Keep reading below for a snapshot of Savannah, who has come back to work for us on the weekends, while going to school full time during the week. We’re glad to have her around again! Enjoy your final week of February.

Cheers!

Coffee Of The Week

Fair Trade Organic Peru Cenfrocafe

One of the perks of having kids that are in middle school, is that they don’t need help with their homemade Valentine’s. In fact, my eighth grader didn’t make any, and my 6th grader worked hard all by herself on brownies. Well, she might have had a bit of help from Dad and Grandma when she realized that she had quadrupled the cocoa, and only doubled everything else. But it all turned out okay in the end–as we can all testify. They were delicious!

All my sympathies this week were with the parents of elementary school children, and teachers, working hard to make Valentines for the whole class. So much fun, but so much time. But the end result is awfully sweet. The sixth graders were required to write a compliment for each classmate, and the thoughtful notes were heartwarming to read last night when she brought them home. Good job teachers, for bringing kindness into the classroom and believing that it matters!

This week we are featuring our Fair Trade Organic Peru, from Cenfrocafe. This organization was established in 2000 with 220 small farmers, and now, nineteen years later, they have over 2000 members. They support both the commercial development of their members, and the community as a whole, by providing education and technical assistance, as well as small loans to those who need it. You can find their website here, and more information about them here.

The most telling thing I read was this quote: CENFROCAFE founding member and former president of the producer Board of Directors, Anselmo Huaman Moreto, explains: “A huge difference in our lives is that now our children can actually go to school, our coffee is being recognized in the market for the quality we produce, we are receiving a fair price for our efforts, and our members can be proud again to be farmers.” Working together as a co-op, they have created a better life for themselves, and a better cup of coffee. We’re glad to be able to pass this on to you.

In the cup this is a sweet and smooth cup of coffee: creamy like fresh caramel. You can try a cup on us this week with the code below. Keep reading for a snapshot of Maddi, who has a unique employment story with us. She worked here, as some of you might remember, two years ago, and then left to travel the world–well, Central and South America, with her boyfriend. They worked on farms all over, including coffee estates. Now they’re back in Grass Valley continuing their education, and we’re delighted to have Maddi back working for us. I know that she has seen coffee like this one in person.

COFFEE OF THE WEEK
Papua New Guinea Korgua Estate Honey Process

Friday got away from me this week, and I didn’t quite get this email sent. We took some time to play in the snow in the middle of the day, and I wasn’t done when I headed home. So here’s your Monday news.

Did it snow at your house this week? Tuesday around here was a “snow day,” meaning that school was canceled. As per usual, it was a lot more hype than actual snow, but we embraced the day off. I didn’t go to work until late afternoon, and the kids and I spent the morning playing in the snow with Archie and Lucy. We had snowball fights, sledded, and built small snowmen. We might have kept at it all day, except I had to take Caroline to ballet.

This weekend it snowed even more, at least at the higher elevations. If you are not local, you might not know that if you love snow (or don’t), all you have to do is drive five minutes to find more/less. It’s a unique feature of living in the foothills. There was only a skiff at our house, but within a five minute drive you could find a foot. It snowed most of Saturday at the higher elevations, but we had no trouble here in town, and we were open every day this week.

We’ve got a new coffee for you from Papua New Guinea. This island to the north of Australia has a varied topography, with mountains all through the center of the country. With such rugged terrain, infrastructure is difficult to build and maintain, and transportation can be an issue. Despite the challenges, this is a delicious coffee, farmed with care at the Korgua Estate in the Nebilyer Valley. This farm was established in the 1930’s by the Leahy family, and Brian Leahy and his family still run it today. It is situated on land between the Ulga and Kolga tribes, and allows both groups to come together to process coffee in this neutral space.

I have a direct connection to Papua New Guinea, since my mother is currently living there and teaching school. Her birthday was February 8th, just last week, so Happy Birthday Mom! I’m grateful for and impressed by all 70 of your years!

In the cup this has a delicious fruity taste, as you would expect from a honey process. If you haven’t had the opportunity to learn about this process, a “honey” coffee has nothing to do with bees–it is a name for the sweetness that occurs when the beans are dried with come of the mucilage intact. It is not the entire fruit, like in a natural or dry process, but it is not entirely cleaned like with a washed bean–so this is sort of an in between style of coffee processing. We’ve roasted this light, and you will taste notes of fig and melon, in a medium bodied and smooth cup.

Whatever the winter weather is doing in your area, enjoy your week. We’re forecast to get more rain, so I’ll be drinking this Papua New Guinea bean in honor of my mother. Cheers!

COFFEE OF THE WEEK
Fair Trade Organic Rainforest Alliance Rwanda Dukunde Kawa Mbilima
This week was a sad one around here, as five former and current employees are moving to the Pacific Northwest. We will be sorry to see them go, but we wish them all the best as they transition to life in a city. I’m certain that they will have a fun time, since they’re moving with friends. Yesterday was the last day for Kelley, Rachel, and Emmit, and it was Emmit’s birthday–so we’re featuring him below.

That means that around here we’re in the process of hiring and training. We’re excited about our new employees, and we’re all working to bring them up to speed. If you see someone with an “In Training” sticker, tell them hi and introduce yourself. You’ll see new faces as our crew changes, but you can expect the same great service.

Our week has been full with interviews and training (and good-byes!), but I wanted to let you know about our coffee of the week. We have a Fair Trade Organic Rainforest Alliance Rwande Dukunde Kawa Mbilima fresh roasted for you. This comes from family farms in the northern part of Rwanda. The Dukunde Kawa Cooperative is a group of over eighty percent women who are working togther to improve the quality of their lives and the sustainability and quality of their coffee. They won the SCAA award for sustainability in 2012, and their coffee has consistently placed in the Cup of Excellence contest.

The Mbilima mill is near a gorilla habitat, in the Gakenke district of Rwanda, so their commitment to the ecology of their area is especially important. In the cup you taste the care that is taken with these beans. It has a floral citrus flavor, like Meyer lemons, but with a sweet caramel finish. It’s a delicious drink, and we’re delighted to have this new crop in stock.

Keep reading for a snapshot of Emmit. He will be greatly missed around here: beside his fun personality and friendship, I would also like to give a shout-out to his artistic abilities. He has done all of our chalkboard printing for probably five years now–thanks Emmit! We are equally grateful to Kelley and Rachel, who are also leaving, and were also key members of our crew. We love you all! I’ll drink coffee in their honor this week. Cheers!
