COFFEE OF THE WEEK
Fair Trade Organic Rainforest Alliance Rwanda Dukunde Kawa Mbilima
This week was a sad one around here, as five former and current employees are moving to the Pacific Northwest. We will be sorry to see them go, but we wish them all the best as they transition to life in a city. I’m certain that they will have a fun time, since they’re moving with friends. Yesterday was the last day for Kelley, Rachel, and Emmit, and it was Emmit’s birthday–so we’re featuring him below.

That means that around here we’re in the process of hiring and training. We’re excited about our new employees, and we’re all working to bring them up to speed. If you see someone with an “In Training” sticker, tell them hi and introduce yourself. You’ll see new faces as our crew changes, but you can expect the same great service.

Our week has been full with interviews and training (and good-byes!), but I wanted to let you know about our coffee of the week. We have a Fair Trade Organic Rainforest Alliance Rwande Dukunde Kawa Mbilima fresh roasted for you. This comes from family farms in the northern part of Rwanda. The Dukunde Kawa Cooperative is a group of over eighty percent women who are working togther to improve the quality of their lives and the sustainability and quality of their coffee. They won the SCAA award for sustainability in 2012, and their coffee has consistently placed in the Cup of Excellence contest.

The Mbilima mill is near a gorilla habitat, in the Gakenke district of Rwanda, so their commitment to the ecology of their area is especially important. In the cup you taste the care that is taken with these beans. It has a floral citrus flavor, like Meyer lemons, but with a sweet caramel finish. It’s a delicious drink, and we’re delighted to have this new crop in stock.

Keep reading for a snapshot of Emmit. He will be greatly missed around here: beside his fun personality and friendship, I would also like to give a shout-out to his artistic abilities. He has done all of our chalkboard printing for probably five years now–thanks Emmit! We are equally grateful to Kelley and Rachel, who are also leaving, and were also key members of our crew. We love you all! I’ll drink coffee in their honor this week. Cheers!
–Holly Fike
