Coffee cultivation in East Timor dates back some 400 years. However, for most of that time farmers were at constant war with leaf rust which destroyed most of the region’s coffee production. It wasn’t until the early 1900’s, when a new coffee varietal called Híbrido de Timor was introduced, that small coffee producers were able to become established.
We care where our coffee comes from. This Organic Timor Peaberry is sourced from family-owned farms – usually on less than one hectare of land. The farms have organized around the Cooperativa Café Timor (CCT). Through a free healthcare initiative, CCT has funded seven rural clinics, three mobile clinic teams, and eleven community healthcare teams.
Right about now you might be wondering – what is a peaberry? Peaberries are estimated to occur in only 5% of the world’s coffee. A peaberry is a natural mutation of the coffee bean in which a single bean develops as opposed to the traditional two. It is a smaller, rounder bean, that tends to be higher in caffeine. Certain coffee aficionados claim peaberries have a superior flavor profile.
