“Bugisu” refers to many things – a geographical region, a tribe, colonial politics, a soccer team and, of course, a coffee. The Bugisu tribe became entwined with agricultural politics during the final years of British Colonialism in Uganda after becoming the nation’s strongest coffee cooperative union. The union helped to mobilize and market the coffees from northwestern Mt. Elgon and was considered a strong source of unity for the Bugisu people and an economic empowerment engine for the greater region.
The name “Bugisu” soon became synonymous with top quality coffee from Uganda. Although the region’s coffee production has gravitated away from unions, the “Bugisu” name remains a mark of pride for Uganda’s top coffee exporters.
