Weekly Newsletter: Brazil Alta Mogiana

Moody SkiesBrazil Alta Mogiana

I had such a lovely week being back on a school routine.  I was guilty of sleeping later during the break, so the 5:45 alarm clock was a bit of an adjustment.  Once I got a steaming mug of coffee in my hand, though, it was nice to be up in the quiet before the kids awoke.  I treasure those moments.

This weekend we’ll be brewing up coffee for the Wild and Scenic Film Festival.  For the schedule of events, check here.  We’ll be open until 7 pm tonight and tomorrow night, if you need a drink before the films start in Grass Valley.  Tomorrow there is an art and wine stroll around both Nevada City and Grass Valley as a part of the festival, and the downtown Grass Valley tasting rooms are offering half off tastings.

Alta Mogiana BrazilOur coffee of the week is a deal to get your new year started right.  Our roastmaster, Trace, is offering this Brazil Alta Mogiana at $8.99 per pound.

Brazilian forms the base of our Espresso blend, but this Alta Mogiana stands alone.  It’s grown by a cooperative of farmers in the south east of Brazil.  This is an area of Brazil that grows higher quality arabica beans, as opposed to the robusta beans which are further north.

Since Brazil is the world’s largest producer of coffee, there are large variations in quality among their beans.  This Alta Mogiana Brazil was given the highest cupping score by the state: FC, SS, meaning fine cup and strictly soft.  We found it to be a crowd pleasing coffee with smooth, nutty and chocolate flavors.  It has a medium acidity and it is easy to drink.

You can come in and try a cup of this Brazil Alta Mogiana on us by using the code further north* this week.  It would be a perfect treat on a rainy day, if we get so lucky tomorrow.  If not, enjoy the sunshine this January.  California may well be one of the only states where it is a treat to be outside right now.  Cheers!
–Holly Fike

*Code good for one free 12 ounce cup of Brazil Alta Mogiana.  Code expires on 1.16.14.  Limit one free cup per customer please.  Valid only at Carolines Coffee Roasters, 128 S. Auburn Street, Grass Valley, CA.  Code/Offer has no cash value.

Weekly Newsletter: Tanzanian Ruvuma

Cousin Beach TimeTanzanian Ruvuma

Happy New Year!  If you live in this area, you know that this year has started beautifully.  2013 in northern California broke the records for the driest calendar year ever (yikes!), but on the bright side the weather this week has been absolutely lovely.  Last weekend I went with my whole family to the beach, and you would not have guessed that it was December.  We enjoyed each others company, and all of the kids spent time running in the waves and finding “treasures.”  It was a good break from our usual routine, and so much fun for the cousins to play together.

Cousin fun in a sand fort

Cousin fun in a sand fort

Today we are getting back on schedule and recovering from the busy holidays.  This evening we have our staff party (look for pictures tomorrow on our Facebook page), which is always much appreciated after the Christmas rush.  The decorations came down here today, and any leftover Christmas items are on sale half off.

Our coffee of the week is an unusual one for us: a Tanzanian flat berry, meaning that is not a peaberry.  We regularly carry a Tanzanian Peaberry bean, for those who love the higher caffeine content and floral/citrus tones of that bean.  This Tanzanian, however, comes from the southernmost region of Tanzania, Ruvuma.

It is grown on small farms, wet-processed, and sun dried.  We roasted it light, and in the cup it starts with an earthy flavor, almost sweet, and finishes with citrus notes.  You especially taste the bright acidity as it cools.

We have this Tanzanian Ruvuma for sale this week for a dollar off per pound.  You can come in and try a cup on us by using the code in bold above (sun dried*).  As you get back into the routine of 2014, be sure to take a moment and enjoy the present, and the moments each day that turn into a year full of memories.  May this new year be full of those moments, and may at least some of them be time spent over good coffee.  Cheers!
–Holly Fike

Weekly Newsletter: Fair Trade Organic Mexican

Fike Family PictureFair Trade Organic Mexican

From our family to yours: Merry Christmas!  Thank you all for allowing us to be a part of your lives this year.  We appreciate each of you who came into the store or ordered from our website.  We had a wonderful Christmas with family stopping by throughout the day.  The kids ran upstairs first thing to see if Santa had arrived–and sure enough, their stockings were full as usual.  They assured that they had been mostly nice, and I guess that Santa agreed.

The best part of Christmas for me were the quiet moments: watching the kids show their gifts to each other as we opened them one at a time.  The sweet notes they had each written me (thank you to all school teachers everywhere–I treasure their homemade gifts).  Sitting outside in the late morning with a fresh-baked cinnamon roll and my favorite mug full of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.  Enjoying the cousins all playing calmly together, and how pretty the little girls all felt in new dresses.

It’s a good time of year for gratitude, for sharing, and for compassion.  I loved seeing my children carefully making gifts for special friends and family members.  They were so thoughtful about making sure that they had something for everyone–even making more crafts Christmas morning for those they had forgotten.  I hope that you felt as loved as I did on Christmas.

This week we have a new coffee for you: our Fair Trade Organic Mexican.  I know, I know– we haven’t featured a new coffee in a month!  This is a Oaxacan coffee, from one of the southernmost states of Mexico, not far from Guatemala.  It is grown by small farmers who come together to process their coffee in a co-op.  This is roasted light, has a medium acidity, starts with an earthy, nutty flavor and finishes with light floral tones.

I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season, like we did.  Enjoy the weekend, and may the new year bring only blessings your way.  The days are growing longer, infinitesimally, and the joys of 2014 are yours to unwrap starting next Wednesday.  Come on in this week and try the Fair Trade Organic Mexican on us by using the code floral tones*.  Cheers!

Weekly Newsletter: Merry Christmas 2013

Donation Day ParadeMerry Christmas
This is it.  There will not be another newsletter from yours truly until after Christmas.  At that time we will resume our normal routine of featuring a coffee of the week.  Today though, we want to continue to express our appreciation to our many customers.  If you haven’t yet entered our Twelve Giveaways contest, find our blog here to enter.  We are also going to offer you $2.00 off of the pound of coffee of your choice this week, for a little additional cheer.

Walking with joy on Donation Day

Walking with joy on Donation Day

This morning I had the treat of watching the local schoolchildren fill the streets of downtown as they marched in the local Donation Day parade.  The picture above is from right in front of our store as they walked by, each carrying a can of food.  You can read about the history of the parade, which celebrated its 130th year today, here .  It’s a tradition in our town that started back during the mining days, and this local community still gives back today.  Another reason we love our town.

Tonight we will be open until 9 pm for the final Cornish Christmas.  It’s sure to be a festive event since the weather has been so clear this week.  For the next three days we will have extended hours until 7 pm each night, along with many other downtown shops, for your last minute shopping needs.  We will be closed on Christmas Day, and then open the rest of the week.

I’ll finish this week with a big thank you to all of you who have joined us as customers this season.  We’ve had a great year, thanks to all of you.  Use the code festive event*, for your $2.00 off the pound of coffee of your choice this week.  Enjoy the quiet of the shortest day of the year tomorrow–welcome to winter.  Merry Christmas!

Weekly Newsletter: Twelve Giveaways

Snowy Day HeaderTwelve Giveaways

Last Friday ended with a beautiful snowstorm in Nevada County.  It snowed at all elevations, which is unusual for here: often only the higher spots get snow.  My kids spent the weekend playing outside: building a snowman and tobogganing.  They ended up with two days off of school for the icy conditions (I know, I know–all you midwestern and east coast folks can insert a California snow joke here), so we’ve had a fun week of snow days and Christmas activities.  Winter weather is such a delight when you are six and eight.

Chocolate and Coffee: Yum!

Chocolate and Coffee: Yum!

If you missed our tasting last Sunday with Cello Chocolates, we had a great time despite the snow.  We paired six of their bars with six of our coffees, and gave away free samples to all who showed up.  My favorite pairing was the Natural Balinese coffee with the Peruvian chocolate, and Becky’s favorite was the Bolivian chocolate with the Celebes Kalossi coffee.  If you would like to choose your own favorite, we have a Bach Cello Sweets variety pack (set of six bars) available for the holidays.

As I thought about the Christmas season around here, I realized that it is time for another giveaway, to say thank you to all of our customers.  We decided to giveaway twelve items, and you have the next twelve days, until Christmas, to enter.  All the details are posted on our blog post, here; everything you need to know to enter.  If you have a little extra time, browse the comments about different Christmas traditions: I’ve enjoyed them.

This week we again have our Christmas Coffee brewed as a limited edition release.  When the year ends, it will disappear.  You can sample it in the store by using the code Christmas traditions*, or you can order it online here.   If you would like to pair it with a rich local chocolate bar, we recommend the Ecuador Cello Chocolate.  It’s even good first thing in the morning as a warming treat.  Cheers!

Weekly Newsletter: For the Coffee Lover

Christmas Gifts Header

Jamaican Blue Mountain
Do you have coffee lovers on your holiday gift list?  I know that some of you do, because we’ve had a lot of coffee gifts going out the door around here.  From gift crates to mugs, baskets to pounds of coffee, and everything in between, we’ve been wrapping it up for someone today.  We’ve been enjoying making drinks and toasting bagels nonstop for all of you who have come in.  The cold weather and the cheery music has made it feel like Christmas this week.  Later tonight we are supposed to get our first snow!  We are currently planning on being open until 9 pm for Cornish Christmas, but that will be subject to change due to the weather.

Jamaican BarrelThis Sunday, December 8th, we have a tasting with Cello Chocolate on our calendar.  If you have not met Debi and Ned, they are a local couple who make these single-origin chocolates from bean to bar.  They will be explaining that process on Sunday as we pair their fine chocolates with some of our coffees.  There is no charge for the event: simply show up between 2 pm and 4 pm this Sunday for some chocolate and coffee fun!

This week we have something entirely different to offer you.  Yesterday we received our long-awaited shipment of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.  This Jamaican is a remarkable coffee, processed with the utmost of care.  It comes from the RSW Estates located on the slopes of the Blue Mountains.  This Jamaican is unique in that they have their own processing station, and the coffee is sun-dried and packaged in wooden barrels, instead of the usual burlap sacks.

My favorite quote about this coffee comes in a newsletter from our coffee broker, here.  It’s a great article that describes the entire process of this coffee.  It is obvious why these beans are so sought after.  My favorite part is that when asked the secret to this treasured coffee, the local farmers replied, “if you want great coffee you need ‘happy’ coffee trees tended by happy farmers who are eager to ensure that the trees are properly shaded, pruned, fertilized, weeded and pampered.”  This coffee certainly fits that bill.

Trace roasted this Jamaican first thing this morning.  We have a family tradition of drinking Jamaican Blue Mountain on Christmas morning.  You are welcome to join us, and this week we’re making it easier by offering you a coupon for $5 off per pound of this coffee.  Use the code in bold red above (wooden barrels*) for your discount in the store, or buy it online at the discounted price here.  Cheers!
–Holly Fike

Weekly Newsletter: Christmas Coffee 2013

Apple PieChristmas Coffee 2013

THANK YOU.  From the bottom of my heart I want to thank all of you who read this newsletter, who buy our coffee, who come in monthly, weekly, daily, hourly, who order online, who order for your restaurant, your hotel, your grocery store, your business.  You are the customers who make it all possible, day after day.  You are the reason that Trace roasts coffee, that I pay the bills, that our employees make drinks and package wholesale orders.  We are able to successfully run this operation because of you, and collectively, the entire Carolines Crew would like to say: thank you.

I hope that each of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and made it through the day emotionally and physically intact.  I hope that good food and good conversation were involved.  We had a great day, starting with the Turkey Trot, which Jack ran full out while little Caroline and I had a nice jog together.  I love that this community is so supportive of such a event that two thousand people show up.  Everywhere you turned you saw someone you knew.

In the middle of the day the kids enjoyed making pie with Grandma and Grandpa while Trace and I cooked and got ready for a veritable feast.  In the evening we had a house full of family and friends gathered around for a nontraditional meal of prime rib and Dungeness crab.  We had homemade rolls and more desserts than any one person could even sample.  It made for a leftover-apple-pie kind of breakfast this morning.  Mmmm.

Today we are open until 9 pm to celebrate Grass Valley’s mining tradition with the annual Cornish Christmas celebration.  From 6 pm to 9 pm stores will be open late and there will be craft and food vendors in the street–along with a Santa’s Workshop that offers free crafts for the kiddos, free gift wrapping, and visits with Santa.  You can see more about the event in this video, or check out the Downtown Association’s webpage here.  That’s always a favorite of my kids, along with the Kettle Korn!

Today our coffee of the week is our limited edition Christmas Coffee.  This is always a blend that Trace plans as we taste different coffees throughout the year.  He thinks about which flavors will complement each other for an easy drinking mix.  Here is the description from the label this year:

Oh what a year it has been.
We cried a little (the loss of our beloved
“Big Dave”), we laughed and loved
a lot (our great staff), and I’m
pretty sure that we are going to
make a profit in the end, thanks to
all of you wonderful customers.

This year’s coffee is a blend of a super
bold and chocolate-y Celebes with
a bright and fruity natural-processed
Organic Balinese, and just
a tad of our world famous French Roast.
This is coffee at its best.  Enjoy!

In the spirit of this label, you can try a cup of our Christmas coffee on us by using the code Big Dave*.  We’ll drink to him this week, knowing that he always loved the holiday traditions around here.  I close in gratitude to all of you.  Cheers!
–Holly Fike

Post Scriptus: Mark your calendars for a coffee and chocolate pairing coming up on December 8th.  From 2-4 pm that day we’ll have a tasting with our local Cello Chocolate company.  You won’t want to miss it.  Look for details here soon!

*Code good for one free 12 ounce cup of Christmas Coffee 2013.  Code expires on 12.05.13.  Limit one free cup per customer please.  Valid only at Carolines Coffee Roasters, 128 S. Auburn Street, Grass Valley, CA.  Code/Offer has no cash value.

The free Santa’s Workshop on Mill Street even offers free gift wrapping and crafts for the kids.  They can even decorate a cookie.  My kids love to write a letter to Santa, and they always get one back.  Check out the Grass Valley Downtown Association website here for more information.  Santa’s Workshop is open for every Cornish Christmas, and then from 1-4 each Saturday and Sunday in December and 12-2 on the 23rd and 24th.

Before you head up the street come on in for an Eggnog Latte or one of our Peppermint Mochas.  We have hot chocolate with marshmallows or homemade whip cream for the little ones.  Happy Thanksgiving and welcome to the holidays!

Weekly Newsletter: Rwanda Dukunde Kawa Cooperative

Stockings are HungRwanda Dukunde Kawa Cooperative
Oh wow, what a day.  We have spent this week trying to be better prepared for the anticipated Christmas rush around here.  We’ve moved our condiment table to improve the traffic flow, created a gift wrapping center out front, and put out a ton of fun new product (including some great Hario pour over systems).  The stockings have been hung, the mulling spices are packed, and we will have our annual limited edition Christmas Coffee in stock on Monday.  It’s the holidays folks!  Truly, several employees are currently singing Christmas carols in harmony while cleaning up in back.

We have mugs full of coffee, ready to go!

We have mugs full of coffee, ready to go!

I hope that you all enjoy your Thanksgiving next week.  It’s looking like we will have a house full of friends and family.  I was talking to a customer today about what a great holiday this is: with an emphasis on good food and good company.  I enjoy Thanksgiving Day, and our tradition of starting the day at the MEB II Turkey Trot.  Along with our more traditional foods, I’m looking forward to the fresh California dungeness crab.  The seasonal foods from this time of year are so good: mandarins and pomegranates have been staples in our house lately.

This week our coffee of the week is our Rwandan, from a mostly female cooperative of farmers.  I am thankful this year for all of the farmers who work hard to bring their coffees to our doorstep.  We don’t buy just any coffee: all of ours are carefully chosen for their quality.  It is the choices on the farming and processing level that allow us to provide you with great coffees year round.  These women are dedicated to great coffee and you’ll taste that in the cup.

We’ve roasted this Rwandan light, so that you can taste the care that goes into these beans.  It starts with earthy tones and finishes with a light floral flavor.  This week in appreciation of all of our great customers we are offering you a dollar off of the drink of your choice.  Use the code mandarins* to receive your discount.  May you all have a joyous Thanksgiving, with good coffee and good friends.  Enjoy!
–Holly Fike

In other news, much of my time today was spent checking on our new website.  Check it out here!  Please be patient with us as we’re still working out the kinks.  We’re excited to have it working completely soon.

Weekly Newsletter: Maui Grown

504Maui Grown

Today marks the halfway point of the month of November–although the weather has felt far more like early September, hasn’t it?  The one day that I wore a sweater this week, I was far too warm.  What a nice problem to have in November: a string of sunny days.  This morning I had the opportunity to watch my daughter receive a character award, for compassion.  Isn’t that a great reason to get an award?  She was delighted to be recognized, and she beamed as she shook her teacher’s hand.

A blurry phone photo of a proud girl.

A blurry phone photo of a proud girl.

I do love the holiday season, and especially the Thanksgiving reminder to be grateful for what we have.  In the next few weeks we will be hosting a few giveaways on our Facebook page, here, to say thank you to all of you, our loyal customers.  You are the reason that we are in business, and November is a good season to pause for a minute and say thank you.  Today I am thankful for another blue sky day, gold leaves that crunch underfoot, and a little girl’s joy.

This week we have a Hawaiian offering for you, from the island of Maui.  These arabica typica beans are grown on a large estate just north of Lahaina.  You can visit their website here, and they have a YouTube video of the process from farm to cup here.  The video is particularly interesting, because it shows both a wet-processed coffee and a natural coffee, as we discussed with our two Balinese options last week.  Keep in mind that this is a first world operation, very mechanized, and very different from the small farm and hand picking method used in much of the world.

This Maui Grown is brought in green, as are all of our coffees, and roasted right here in our store.  It has a medium body, bright clean flavor and it cools to chocolate tones.  This comes one hundred percent from Maui, and it is the only plantation on Maui, so it’s a unique bean.  If you love the smooth flavor of a Kona coffee, you’re sure to love this Maui Grown too.

Enjoy a cup on us today by using the code thank you*.  In other news, we have had so many requests for Eggnog Lattes that we started serving them early this year.  Eggnog Lattes, Peppermint Mochas, Hot Apple Cider and Hot Chocolate with Mini Marshmallows are all being offered now.  While the weather is still good, come on in and try your favorite holiday drink.  I’ll be sipping Maui coffee this week, and enjoying memories of our Hawaiian trip last January.  Cheers!
–Holly Fike

Weekly Newsletter: Organic Balinese

Fall Leaves Header 2Organic Balinese

I had the loveliest time last night, chatting with two old friends.  The three of us have known each other over twenty years, since our high school days.  There is nothing quite like the comfort of talking to other mothers who know your mother, know your family, know your story and your history.  You don’t spend time explaining: you get to move immediately to the heart level and talk about how you are really doing.  It is so refreshing for all three of us to get to connect as friends, mothers, wives and women.  What a privilege to get together with these two women.

Gift Basket GiveawayWe have discovered that at this time in our lives, the easiest time to get together is after the kids are in bed, in the evening.  And even then we can only make our schedules coincide every third month or so.  For years we met over coffee, and perhaps someday we will again.  In the meantime I will drink to Lindsey and Betsy this week as I enjoy my morning cup of coffee.

You too can drink to friends old and new this week with some great locally roasted coffee.  How is that for a segue?  We’ve got a fun coffee option for you today.  Last week I wrote about how our Organic Timor is a wet-processed bean.  Well this week Trace, our roaster, decided to let you taste the difference that processing can make to a coffee.  We have two Balinese coffees brewed this week (#2 and #3 in the pump pots), and the biggest difference between them is that one is a natural, or dry-processed coffee, while the other is a washed bean.

With a wet-processed bean, as we discussed last week, the fruit is removed by washing before the bean is dried.  In dry-processing, the red cherry is left intact while drying.  This causes a natural fermentation to occur, and a natural coffee tends to have much fruitier flavors when it is brewed.  These two Organic Balinese coffees prove this to be true, with the washed one (#3) tasting bold and full-bodied, like a classic Indonesian coffee.  The natural (#2) has notes of fruit, wine and berries.

We are doing something different this week with our free cup, so that you can sample both of these coffees.  When you use the code red cherry*, we will give you two four ounce cups, so that you can try these side by side.  If you come in tomorrow, you will also be able to participate in the downtown Holiday Open House event.  Over thirty participating merchants, including yours truly, will be kicking off the holiday season with promotions, sales, and fun activities.  We will be giving away the gift basket pictured above (full of gourmet goodies!) to one lucky winner.  You can enter your name tomorrow, and we’ll choose the winner on Monday.  Good luck!
–Holly Fike
