Coffee cupping 2017Costa Rica Monte Crisol

On Tuesday night this week we had an employee coffee cupping. I think that everyone had fun and learned a lot. It’s amazing how different coffee beans can taste. I know that in my head, but it is really evident when you are tasting coffees side by side. We intentionally chose three very different coffees (unlike a true cupping, where we taste similar beans to choose one), to highlight their unique characteristics. We tried our Natural Ethiopian, our Organic Gayo Mountain Sumatra, and our Kona Fancy.

Two of the coffees were washed, and one was a dry, or natural, process. The process certainly becomes a part of what you taste: there is a lot of residual fruit flavor to the Natural Ethiopian. It was also interesting how differently we all describe what we taste. We each had the same beans in front of us, but the descriptors were all unique. One person would taste maple syrup, another molasses, another caramel–all similar but slightly different. No matter how precise the process, what we taste is personal.

This week we are featuring a sweet bean for you, however you would like to describe it. When we tasted our Costa Rica Monte Crisol, the words that came up were: smooth, hazelnut, sweet, creamy, cocoa nibs, light body. You’ll have to sample it and tell us what you think. We did all agree that the aroma is amazing, with strong chocolate and nut tones.

Before we tasted this coffee, it was grown in the highlands of north-central Costa Rica, and processed by CoopePalmares, a processor that prepares coffee both for in country and for export. You can see their website here, and read about how they work for sustainability and the well-being of their associates. They started in 1962 with 80 members, and now have over 1400 growers in the co-op.

You can try this Costa Rica on us this week with the code sunny days*. It’s been nice to see the sun this week, and get outside, after an exceptionally rainy month. Although I have no complaints: we certainly needed all those storms. I believe that it is supposed to remain sunny at least through the weekend, and I’m glad: a bit of blue is good for the soul. Whatever you do this weekend, drink good coffee. Cheers!
–Holly Fike

Snowmen HeaderNatural Ethiopian Sidamo

If you live in Nevada County, you probably fell asleep last night to the whistle of the wind, and woke up this morning to the same thing. It’s been a stormy winter for sure, and I have loved hearing all the rain/snow/wind. We did have a lovely sunny three day weekend in there–in our family we celebrated by planting bulbs and cleaning up the garden. It was good to be outside digging in the dirt. We discovered that our daffodils are out of the ground already, poking their heads up to see how the year is doing. The cycle of the flowers is affirming: life marches on.

In case you missed it on Instagram, we deal with this cuteness daily. It's a wonder anything gets done around here!

In case you missed it on Instagram, we deal with this cuteness daily. It’s a wonder anything gets done around here!

On Monday I took the kids to play in the snow. It was solely a play day, and they loved it. Today we’re back to pouring rain. According to the National Weather Service, Nevada County is out of the drought. You can see a great graph that YubaNet posted here. I’m also enjoying checking the status of our northern California reservoirs as they steadily rise. I posted this link last year, but I like to check the California water data here. Many of our lakes are above their historical average, so the water situation in California is improving by the day.

On a rainy or snowy day, there’s not much better to have in your hand than a mug of fresh roasted coffee. This week we have our Natural Ethiopian Sidamo for you to sample. These are indigenous beans, grown in a country known as the birthplace of coffee. You can find the story in many different forms, but as legend has it, a goatherd in Ethiopia, Kaldi, noticed his goats dancing after eating some red berries. He tried them and starting dancing too. He took them to the local monastery, where the monks used them to stay awake during prayers.

From there they spread to the Arabian peninsula. It’s not known who first put the beans into a fire, and then brewed them, but for centuries coffee was a carefully guarded secret. Sometime in the 17th century coffee was smuggled into Europe, and from there it spread around the world via the European colonies. You can now find coffee in some form on all of the continents–but it all started with some wild trees in Ethiopia.

These particular Ethiopian beans are a natural, or dry process. This means that the beans are dried with the fruit still in place. The result is a beautiful berry flavor in the cup, with notes of plums and apricots. This coffee was processed by Guji Coffee Export PLC (their website is here), by Grima Edema. According to our broker, here:

“the focus on selection of only ripe cherries that are meticulously dried on raised beds and milled in a vertically integrated operation gives Grima full control of the processing up to the final export stage, resulting in an exceptionally clean and sweet cup profile.”

You can try a cup of this Ethiopian on us this week with the code no drought*. Enjoy the rain, and drink good coffee. Cheers!

Bridgeport headerHigh-Grown Mexican Altura

This morning I was sipping my coffee and getting ready for the day when the sun peeked over the ridge out my window. I exclaimed out loud as the rays hit me, even though only the cat heard. Sunshine? What is that? If you live in northern California, you know what I mean. We’ve had so much rain in the last week that it seemed like the sky might always be grey. And that the soundtrack of our days might always be a solid pounding thrum of nonstop water. But there was an end after all–at least until next week.

Water rushing under the old Hwy 49 bridge last Sunday

Water rushing under the old Hwy 49 bridge last Sunday

Joking aside, I know there are many of you dealing with serious issues from all the rain. There has been flooding, sinkholes, power outages, trees down, landslides and more. We drove around last weekend, when it was all beginning, and checked out our local streams, creeks and rivers. You can find those pictures on our Facebook page here. Our hearts go out to those who were affected locally. We feel very grateful that our business, our employees, and our family are all safe.

This week we have our High-Grown Mexican Altura coffee for you. These beans are grown by small farmers, most with less than ten acres, in the mountains of Chiapas and Oaxaca. This is volcanic territory, and coffee loves rocky acidic soil. It is a high grown coffee, which is important because at higher elevations the beans are denser, and the yields are lower, which leads to higher quality coffee.

In the cup this coffee has nutty flavors, and a lingering finish of dark chocolate. It has a nice dry acidity and it’s a smooth way to start your day. I hear that we have another atmospheric river headed our way next week, so this would be a great cup to keep you going. I know that I’m going to take some home.

You can try a cup of this Mexican on us this week with the code wild rivers*. I hope that you all enjoy the next few days of dry weather. I am planning on getting outside this weekend while the sun shines. If you’re looking for something to do, the Wild and Scenic film festival is going on in Grass Valley and Nevada City through Sunday. Enjoy your three day weekend, and drink good coffee. Cheers!

Trace and Caroline 1988Colombian Supremo

Caroline Fike in 1946--age 9

Caroline Fike in 1946–age 9

So the lady in the header picture, Caroline Fike, is turning eighty-years-old tomorrow, and I want to take a moment to honor her today. She started this business 35 years ago this April, in 1982, and we are still here, in the words of her son, “because of her tenacity.” If you don’t know her story, Caroline married her high school sweetheart 61 years ago, and raised four boys in forest service cabins across the state of California. When her first son was born she washed diapers on a washboard–that was a backwoods cabin!

Her husband was gone on fires for a good part of each year, back in the days when you didn’t “time out.” She took care of everything while he was gone, and welcomed him with a smile when he returned. All who know her know of her love for her husband. By the time all of her boys were out of the house, she was looking for something to do–she certainly wasn’t one to sit still. She decided to buy an existing business, called “The Honey Center,” which sold health food and beekeeping supplies, and was located on Neal St. in downtown Grass Valley.

A couple of years later, her husband Chuck retired from the Forest Service and joined her in the business, along with their youngest son Trace. They sold coffee, but could never buy it in small enough quantities to keep it fresh–and so they bought a roaster. This was in the days when most people bought Folgers, and Starbucks only had one location. Specialty coffee was not a thing, to put it mildly. But they had a vision before their time, and Chuck and Trace started roasting coffee at their new location at 128 S Auburn St. in 1984.

Carolines Coffee Roasters has grown and changed over the years, and those who know us now might not know Caroline. She worked here daily for over twenty-five years. She introduced specialty coffee to Grass Valley, and explained to customers why freshness mattered, and what an espresso was. Before the internet, and the expansion of coffee shops nationwide (the Specialty Coffee Association of America was founded in 1982 also), Caroline was educating folks on coffee in this small town.

Behind the counter, ready to help

Behind the counter, ready to help

We sat around the table the other night and Chuck, Caroline, and Trace talked about the early days of this business. How they were taught to roast coffee by Carl Ernst Diedrich. How they bought a Landmark Coffee grocery contract in order to get the SPD stores as customers. How lucky they were to have the mother of specialty coffee, Erna Knutsen, as their broker until her retirement. How many different grocery stores and restaurants they sold to/serviced over the years. How they used to pay the bills on a wing and a prayer. How many employees they’ve had over the years.

As I listened to them reminisce, I was struck by how much of themselves each had poured into the business. And I thought that more than anything else, that is the legacy of Caroline Fike here at Carolines Coffee Roasters. It’s more than her name and it’s more than the tens of thousands of hours she spent here. Her legacy is in the values that we still espouse today. In our commitment to customer service, our commitment to our community, our commitment to serve the finest coffees from around the world. Those all come from Caroline. They endure because they are built into the fiber of our business–she gave them to us.

Happily retired today.

Happily retired today.

On a personal note, Caroline Fike is one of my best friends. She has the best listening ear of anyone I know, and she responds with wisdom. She has a great sense of humor, and a knack for letting people be themselves. She is strong, with the strength of pioneer women, who had to do it all–and knew they could. But even in her strength she’s not afraid to admit she’s wrong. She’s proud of her family, and loves her boys fiercely, but carries herself with humility. She is one of the most stylish women I know. She is not only one of my friends–she is one of my heroes.

I would love to say that I had planned ahead enough this week so that our featured coffee is Caroline’s favorite. But I didn’t. This week we are brewing our Colombian Supremo, and you can try a cup with the code 80 years*. Caroline’s favorite is our Organic Gayo Mountain Sumatra, and to celebrate her birthday, I am going to make it $3 off per pound this week. So come buy a pound and drink a cup to our founder, Caroline Fike. Cheers! And happy birthday Caroline.

Snow Play Header 2Costa Rica Dota Tarrazu

I hope that each of you had a lovely holiday, and that you have festive plans to celebrate the new year this weekend.  We had a house full of guests on Christmas Day, and then two days later we gathered again to honor Grandma Caroline, who will be 80 years young in January.  Her four sons were all there to pay tribute to her strength, grace, and tenacity.  Happy Birthday Caroline!  You continue to inspire all of us here at Carolines Coffee Roasters.

Still 79--and looking even younger

Still 79–and looking even younger

Yesterday Trace and I played hooky from the store and took the kids to play in the snow. There is nothing that my daughter likes better than snow–she’s convinced that she will live in Alaska when she’s older, because “there’s snow there all the time.” We did end the day with a round of ice-skating in Truckee, but the kids’ favorite was rolling and playing and climbing in about a foot of snow above Sierra City.

I took a mug of this week’s featured coffee for the drive–our Costa Rica Dota Tarrazu. This coffee is grown in the famous Tarrazu region, and comes from a co-op of farmers who are committed to environmental sustainability and job creation in their area. You can see their website here and here. The pictures of the region are beautiful, with lush valleys and rugged mountains.

This is a sweet bean in the cup, with a fruity aroma as you sip. It tastes of apricot with a hint of vanilla, and the taste lingers more than many Costa Rican coffees. You can try a cup of this on us this week with the code new year*. And at this, the final two days of 2016, I want to be sure to tell each of you: thank you. Thank you for reading our emails, for buying our product, for supporting us, for believing in us. Thank you for your kind words, smiles, and generous gifts. We appreciate you all, and we look forward to spending 2017 with you. Cheers!

Christmas Mug HeaderJamaican Sale and FTO Nicaraguan Special

‘Tis the season for so many things.  I hope that for you it is a season of thankfulness, and joy.  And that you are finding some peace amongst the hustle.  I know that I have to seek to find the moments of quiet and gratitude.  Luckily, even in the middle of a show week (it’s Nutcracker time for us), there is so much for which to be thankful.  Around here, we are so glad for our many customers.  In that spirit we are continuing our December of deals with a sale on our Jamaican Blue Mountain.

Ready for the Nutcracker

Ready for the Nutcracker

Our Christmas tradition is to drink Jamaican Blue Mountain on Christmas morning.  I like to take it a step further and eat dark chocolate out of my stocking while I drink it.  Provided there is dark chocolate in my stocking (wink, wink, Santa).  This is a beautiful coffee, delicate and delicious, and I can’t wait to continue the magic this year.  If you would like to drink Jamaican, it’s $5 off per pound through next Wednesday, both in store and on the website.

We do also have a featured coffee this week, in addition to the sale.  It’s our Fair Trade Organic Nicaraguan.   This also pairs beautifully  with chocolate–it’s one of my favorite matches.  It comes from the highlands of Jinotega, and it is grown by a co-op of family farmers.  Together the co-op has provided money for education for the farmers and their children and helped construct a rural school.

In the interest of keeping this short–since I need to put some ringlets in a little girl’s hair, you can try this Nicaraguan with the code jingle bells* this week.  If you’re still doing your holiday shopping, we have all kinds of coffee gifts in stock.  And our chocolate covered espresso beans make a great stocking stuffer.

A big thanks to all of you who entered our giveaway last week.  We read every comment, and enjoyed hearing about your Christmas traditions.  We appreciate you sharing.  Have a great week before Christmas, and drink good coffee.  Cheers!

downtown-christmasA Giveaway and El Salvador Las Ninfas Pacamara

This has been a festive week in my home. We had our weekly family meal on Monday night, then on Tuesday we attended the MIM Youth Orchestra Holiday Concert. Wednesday night we had the fun of watching my daughter be Sacajawea in her class play–a reconstruction of the journey of Lewis and Clark. Those fourth graders were amazing in their acting abilities. Then the next two days bring more holiday parties and festivities. It’s a full schedule, but it’s sure fun.

Handing out programs before her play.

Sr. Valdivieso and his daughter also own Santa Leticia farm, which we have featured before, and there they run a hotel and restaurant. You can see their website here.

This coffee is a unique varietal, that was created by scientists at the Salvadoran Institute of Coffee Research (ISIC). It is a blend of Paca, a Salvadorean bourbon variety, and Maragogype, which is known for its gigantic beans. As you would expect, this is a large beaned coffee, with a beautiful flavor. It is a pulped natural, or honey process, and has fruity apricot tones in the cup, with a creamy finish.

stocking-header-2016A December of Deals

I always have mixed feelings about the arrival of December. It’s such a busy month, but it also has some of the most magical moments. I love getting up in the dark and seeing the living room lit only by the soft white lights on the Christmas tree. We get out our box of holiday stories (this is everyone’s favorite) and read one a night, at least when we’re home. I get to see my daughter in the Nutcracker (there are two local productions, see here and here), and listen to her play Christmas carols on the cello. Friday nights bring Cornish Christmas to downtown, and Wednesdays and Sundays there is Victorian Christmas in Nevada City.

We strive to be a place that is spreading cheer during the holidays, and in that spirit we are offering you a December of Deals. This week all items on our website are 15% off, with the code CHEER15. We’ll keep the deals (and the giveaways) going all month, so check weekly for a new special. If you need a gift shipped, our Around the World box has been popular this year: six assorted coffees from different growing regions to taste and compare.

In addition to the online sale, we do have a coffee special this week. We now have in stock our Organic Rainforest Alliance Island of Flores. Flores is a smaller island in the Indonesia archipelago, located south of Sulawesi and to the east of Bali and Java. It is one of only two places in the world where Komodo dragons live naturally: the other being the neighboring island of Komodo.

This is a fully washed coffee, with the earthy tones that you might expect from an Indonesian bean. But it also tastes of dried plum and light citrus flavors: it’s easy to drink and sweet as you sip. You can try a cup on us this week with the code snowflake dreaming*. May your December have more of the merry and less of the bustle this year. Cheers!

gold-building-headerChristmas Coffee 2016, with Thanks

The sun was turning the windows gold when I walked into Carolines this morning. The rays were peeking from a gray sky and the building looked like it had been decorated with shiny glitter to celebrate the holiday season. Today is the first Cornish Christmas, and Mill St. will be closed so that you can safely browse the vendors. This year food trucks have been added, and tonight the CHP Clydesdales will be in attendance–you can read more about it here.

Yes, there is a baby hiding in this picture. Archie's first Turkey Trot.

Yes, there is a baby hiding in this picture. Archie’s first Turkey Trot.

Yesterday Trace and I were up early to brew coffee for the MEB II Turkey Trot. They were featured in the paper today, here, and it says that there were over 3000 of us there. It was a wonderful way to start our day. Little Archie was even there for his first Turkey Trot, but it will be a couple of years before he is walking. It was fun to see so many families and friends there–and employees too!

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving meal at the end of the day, and I sure hope that you did too. Grandma Caroline made her usual too many pies: I believe we had pecan, pumpkin, peach, apple, lemon meringue, and chocolate. I might have forgotten some, but we all enjoyed eating them.

Before I introduce this year’s Christmas Coffee, I would like to say thank you to all of you, our customers. We appreciate you. We say regularly around here that we have the best customers, and I think it is true. It’s often said that we keep you going–we do sell coffee after all–but I think in reality it’s often the other way around. Your smiles, thoughtfulness, and kind words keep us going, and support us. Thank you.

Our 2016 Christmas Coffee is as follows, straight from the label:

This year’s coffee is a blend of two perennial favorites: our Sulawesi Toraja and our French Roast. The Sulawesi, or Celebes, has a deep earthy flavor, with nutty chocolate tones. It comes from the highlands of this Indonesian island. Our French Roast is a blend of Central and South American beans, carefully chosen to make a roast that is full-bodied while still sweet. This is a wonderfully layered coffee with lots of depth and a long, lingering finish.

We will be featuring this coffee from now until Christmas. It’s a limited edition, so when it’s gone, it’s gone. Come in and try a cup on us today with the code thankful*. We also have many of our gift packages made up and ready to go, if you need a gift for a coffee lover. You can find them online here. Enjoy!

river-header-2016Organic Rainforest Alliance Blue Krishna Balinese

Superheroes! photo: Sophie Diamant-Agar

On Wednesday I got to float down the South Yuba River with my daughter’s class, to observe spawning salmon. It was a fun and educational trip, hosted by SYRCL naturalists. After a few days of rain, it was a perfectly sunny day, cool in the morning, but warming up as the trip progressed. We saw salmon, dead and alive, and I think the kids will always remember the salmon life cycle. On top of that, it was an easy introduction to the river, and I know my daughter would love to go rafting again.

Last Monday was Halloween, which we love around here. We had a superhero theme going on (I dressed as a bee, wore a cape, and was a “super pollinator”). Our creative staff came up with all kinds of superhero costumes, but little Archie definitely took the prize as Superman. The best part of the day is watching all the kids come through for the Downtown Trick-or-Treat. They are darling, and you can see some pictures on our Facebook page here.

This week I am glad to say that our coffee of the week is our Organic Blue Krishna Balinese. It’s back in stock! I know that many of you have been waiting for it to be available, so here you go. For those of you who don’t know, this comes from the island of Bali, and it’s a Rainforest Alliance certified organic bean. It is grown in the Kintamani highlands of central Bali, on small family farms.

These farms are organized around the principle of Subak Abian, a Hindu philosophy that emphasizes a three part harmony between God, others, and the environment. This is also an ancient irrigation system that supports these farms, which you can read about on Wikipedia here. These terraced farms are grown under citrus trees, which helps supplement their income and provide diversity in the soil.

In the cup this is a sweet bean, with dark chocolate and plum tones. It’s easy to drink, and a favorite of several of our employees. Can you picture the shiny leaves and red berries of this coffee growing under a canopy of oranges on a tropical island? If that doesn’t make you want to try it, I don’t know what will. It sounds beautiful to me.

You can try this coffee with the code superman* this week. The autumn colors are beautiful in our area right now. Come get a cup of coffee and enjoy the scenery. Happy November!
–Holly Fike
