On Wednesday I got to float down the South Yuba River with my daughter’s class, to observe spawning salmon. It was a fun and educational trip, hosted by SYRCL naturalists. After a few days of rain, it was a perfectly sunny day, cool in the morning, but warming up as the trip progressed. We saw salmon, dead and alive, and I think the kids will always remember the salmon life cycle. On top of that, it was an easy introduction to the river, and I know my daughter would love to go rafting again.

Last Monday was Halloween, which we love around here. We had a superhero theme going on (I dressed as a bee, wore a cape, and was a “super pollinator”). Our creative staff came up with all kinds of superhero costumes, but little Archie definitely took the prize as Superman. The best part of the day is watching all the kids come through for the Downtown Trick-or-Treat. They are darling, and you can see some pictures on our Facebook page here.

This week I am glad to say that our coffee of the week is our Organic Blue Krishna Balinese. It’s back in stock! I know that many of you have been waiting for it to be available, so here you go. For those of you who don’t know, this comes from the island of Bali, and it’s a Rainforest Alliance certified organic bean. It is grown in the Kintamani highlands of central Bali, on small family farms.

These farms are organized around the principle of Subak Abian, a Hindu philosophy that emphasizes a three part harmony between God, others, and the environment. This is also an ancient irrigation system that supports these farms, which you can read about on Wikipedia here. These terraced farms are grown under citrus trees, which helps supplement their income and provide diversity in the soil.

In the cup this is a sweet bean, with dark chocolate and plum tones. It’s easy to drink, and a favorite of several of our employees. Can you picture the shiny leaves and red berries of this coffee growing under a canopy of oranges on a tropical island? If that doesn’t make you want to try it, I don’t know what will. It sounds beautiful to me.

You can try this coffee with the code superman* this week. The autumn colors are beautiful in our area right now. Come get a cup of coffee and enjoy the scenery. Happy November!
