Happy Fourth of July to all of you! I hope that you enjoy your holiday. In our area the local parade switches between Grass Valley and Nevada City each year, in a tradition that started 114 years ago (see this YubaNet article). On the years that Grass Valley is hosting, we stay open, so we’ll see you tomorrow between 7 am and 1 pm. Happy birthday America.

This weekend we are hosting a family reunion, and looking forward to seeing relatives from out of town. We are also celebrating Chuck Fike’s 80th birthday. Chuck retired from the Forest Service about thirty years ago and started the coffee roasting side of Carolines. He has now retired from his second career too, but we all appreciate Chuck’s love of coffee which led to the addition of a roaster so many years ago. His legacy lives on as Trace continues to roast beans daily.

We’ve got a new coffee for you to try this week, our Fair Trade Malawi Mzuzu. Malawi is a landlocked African country, in the southeast of the continent, surrounded by Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Zambia. This coffee comes from northern Malawi, in the uplands to the west of Lake Malawi. It is processed by a cooperative that “emphasizes gender equality and supports community improvement projects (from here).”

This Fair Trade Malawi coffee is roasted light and tastes of sweet citrus notes. It has a medium to high acidity and you get a great lingering flavor as you sip. Those of you who like bright African beans will love this coffee. This week you can try a cup on us with the code flags waving*.

I hope that you all enjoy your Independence Day. If you’re in Grass Valley, come grab a mocha freeze and watch the parade. It’s always the epitome of small town charm, with local bands performing and kids waving flags while dressed in red, white and blue. Stay cool and celebrate this country whose freedoms are unsurpassed. Enjoy!
–Holly Fike
